Introducing Collaborative Website Editing

There are quite a few reasons why you might want to allow other people to edit and update your website. Maybe you want to give co-workers access to help keep your homepage content fresh, or maybe you want to give a friend access to co-author a blog with you.

All this and more is now possible with our newly released Collaborative Website Editing features.

Here’s how it works:

There's now a new tab in Weebly called Editors. This tab enables you to invite other people to help you edit and build your website. Just enter the emails of your invitees, choose their role, and type up a short message to add them.

New editors receive an email invitation with a link they can click to get started, and the website is then listed as a site they can contribute to in their site dashboard.

If you’re a free user, you can invite an unlimited number of people to administer the site with you. If you’re a Pro user, you can restrict people’s editing access to specific pages or limit access to the dashboard only for viewing site stats, blog comments, and form entries.

If multiple people are editing a site at the same time, the system will intelligently show you which pages the others are editing so your updates don't conflict with one another.

We've created a quick demo video to show you the new features in action:

Collaborative editing was one of our most highly requested features and we’re extremely excited to release it live to the millions of websites on Weebly.

Also included in this release is the option to copy a site. When you press the “more” button in the site dashboard, you’ll see the option to copy the site which generates a duplicate copy you can use for a similar purpose.

As a teenage blogger, the only downside to weebly I've found is that you can only comment on blog posts. Perhaps a comment widget you could drop in could be added in the future?

Very cool feature but getting problems with site copying. -- I just copied my first site and the new site copy has elements out of order on various pages, images that did not keep the same margin settings, and no page copies kept SEO and meta data.

Great move! I have people who want to add things, but I don't want them to have access to the whole site, so if they have access to just the pages they need I will feel far more comfortable and in control!

I am so happy to see this feature! Building a website portal for a group, and needed it badly. I would like to make a few suggestions.

Please give those that have been granted "Administrative Level" access (access to everything) the capability to further delegate people. Or, provide the option to toggle delegation capability with a checkbox or something... "This person can delegate authors and dashboard access: Y/N"

I have not explored it fully, but will there be some sort of "change log" for the administrator(s) to view? It would come in handy to see at a glance what changes are being made in a snapshot view.

I love the collaborative editing feature ... in theory. However, as the website owner, I would like to be able to review changes that are made BEFORE they are published live. For example, I would like an authorized person to be able to make changes and then have it put on hold until I review it and then publish it live. Can this functionality be added to the Pro Level?

@Karen,

This feature already exists! If you look at the screenshot in this blog post, you'll see that the "Author" role has the option to "Disable access to publish changes to live site".

I think that's what you're looking for!

Great update, shame there was a huge gap though, I got very frustrated about that and I also got my email asking to renew my Pro account 3 days ago, I was thinking of not going ahead because I have to build 2 sites because of language - google translate does not cut the mustard.

I´m not the only one needing this. Look.

So,I´ve felt the need to petition this on the comments section since I joined and now we have another person wanting, how many people warrants this to become reality?

We just need a language option, little flag showing the languages supported or even a drop down list.

Imagine "Cross Cultural Collaborative Editing" - we have our sites edited into other languages, like Wikipedia for example! Makes sense Weebly!

Your gonna be huge like Facebook, Myspoace, Occult etc - you offer something bigger and better than Facebook because this is personal and infinate, take a risk, hire more programmers and please get even more features done.

Outstanding. I actually saw the Editor feature today and hadn't seen the blog entry. Immediately wrote to a friend about it. This definitely opens up new site possibilities that weren't here before. I'll have to see if each member can only edit the blog entries THEY have written; if not, this would be nice to add. In fact, that could really expand the use of this sharing aspect.

I agree with others that Weebly is quickly becoming one of the nicest website platforms around.

The copy site tool is excellent! But why are we still working on sign-in and log-in features that lead back to weebly.com? When are we going to get the dedicated log-in and sign-in feature's? Every new feature is somehow or another leading you back to weebly.com which is not the most professional looking thing to have on a business website! If you could get this feature up and running it would place you at the top of any other designing program out there because web designers will be able to design website's for people and they wont even know it was built on a FREE website template, but now every little thing leads back to weebly.com making it much harder for a designer to pass of to a client as "professional work"! PLEASE CONSIDER THIS OPTION AS A MAJOR PRIORITY!
