@andy: Right now, you can vote for your favorite theme, but can't yet use the theme on your website.

Over the coming weeks, we're going to be converting the best themes from the contest into Weebly themes that you can use on your website.

Beautiful and nice themes. These participants are indeed gifted with such talents. By the way, since there are about 2,000 themes that were submitted... we are just wondering if Weebly Management could somehow allow the public to vote on to at least 20 or 15 themes? Anyway, if that is not possible...GOOD LUCK to all !!! May the best and deserving win...

Good work weebly....and thank you.

I think the finalists are gorgeous, it's hard to choose. Question for the Weebly folks ... I entered the contest just for the chance at having my theme added to the Weebly library, so I could use it for my own site. Can you be more specific about how many of the entries will be converted into live themes, and how we will know if our entries are chosen or rejected for this?

David, Dan, and Weebly staff,
the changes are good and as ive said before, the better you make it the more people will sign up,
However one thing that is badly needed and missing is a help forum just for the members. (both paying and non paying) It helps everybody by

1) Freeing up time spent on your support strategy page eg members helping members

2) Quicker response time to problems encounted by members, helped by members.

3) Members dont have to search yahoo answers and getsatisfication.com etc.

4) You (Weebly) will learn more about weebly and what WE as customers want and value.

Just my 2 cents
Anyway keep up the good work
Drob.

I also loved The Reader and Pinkish. Because I couldn't vote three times, I am campaigning for those two, especially The Reader.

The Reader Campaign Ad:
VOTE FOR THE READER! BEST IN SHOW! VOTE FOR THE READER! IT'S THE BEST IN SHOW! IT'S GIVEN ME AN IDEA FOR MY NEXT SITE! I'VE NEVER SEEN A DESIGN AS WONDERFUL AS IT! VOTE FOR THE READER!

Pinkish Campaign Ad:
Vote for Pinkish! It's lovely, and my favorite color! That header's like bubbles from a fairy child's bubble wand, I'd never want to change it, and the design is spectacular! Vote for Pinkish, please!

You can see, my campaign ad for the Reader is a little stronger.

Reply
05/27/2010 4:19am

I tend to agree (partly - nothing to do with masculine or feminine) with Debbie (Mon, 24 May 2010 10:45:49 pm)
All top 10 are very technical, engineer like, cold, too well planned, no arty inspiration at all, nothing original, not a trace of vintage, funky, interesting designs.

It seems that the chosen websites layouts might not be my cup of tea but they are average good in looks therefore business wise good Weebly choice, meaning, it'll be easy for many people who will use Weebly to choose one of these layouts for their website. In evidence, most of the blog comments…

In any way, good luck to the finalists.

Pitrih,

I think that you do have a point on that pinkish theme. I guess it is very hard to locate weather or not people have truly designed their own concept but I still feel that all was done to minimize this. I guess all you can do is ask people to play fair. It certainly doesn't look good for that theme with this link you posted. It is a difficult contest in regulation and My personal opinion of a future contest would be a finish product contest. If you can't code it you better learn.

However I feel the company did the homework they could to the best of their ability. We all should be thankful. If you based this contest on the regulation aspects having to be flawless there would have been no contest. Weebly has a high willingness to learn and this is a learning concept. It's a lot more then any other company is doing for it's users. We're having fun on this side of the web building market :) It's ok that the very first design contest ever offered on the internet today for a website builder may not come out the first time like it was a 100th contest aniversary. Thanx weebly for doing the best you can do to put this contest together and help make the next one even better :-)

My God, I was just informed by a friend that all my 3 designs have been chosen between the finals!

I mostly focused to craft those designs as general as possible so that they can be useful for various needs & niches, or as Mark_etingPRO put it: "These templates are unisex and ready for all occasion."

I agree with VAM that removing the banner images will make most of the themes loose their uniqueness. That's why I'm not using typical images, just some artsy graphics serving as placeholders that can easily be replaces by actual ones when needed.

Ok, enough self-marketing. Hope you'll find my themes useful, even if I don't win none of the prices.

I don't want to make the finalists feel bad, cause these are all pretty designs and the designers can feel good about that. But, to weebly who chose these as the top ten, look, these are all just more of the same that you already offer. There isn't any innovation here. And just like all your other pre-formatted templates they waste screen space nor draw the reader towards anything in particular. They're just screens with images too large splattered everywhere that don't make much design sense, and blobs of text with far too much "white space" and far too much was of screen space. All of your templates are like this. There is no conservation of space inheriently designed into your templates, no variation of links to pages within the site that offers more than the always confusing horizontal arrangement of links to other pages nor any clean effort to design a really well planned group of vertical links to other pages on the site. If you really want to give us some good templates we need more and better than what you have. Well planned templates that do more than splatter stuff on screens in colorful ways, but templates that have clean vertical link groups off to the side and where the main body area isn't wasted by white space and margins that are too wide and which don't have backgrounds so hard to scrape off in the edit html/css area that its a chore just to try and get the colors of text that compose the link labels to something that agrees with your concept, and templates that help guide any reader viewing the site in a manner that renders good design up to having a purpose of where it drags a viewers eye and how the eye instinctively follows this design without even knowing its planned.

All of these templates are lovely, but none of these, nor any of the existing ones on weebly offer any real design help. They just look pretty. But thats not enough to make a site last.

thanks for letting me grumble.

Clean Truth,

This contest is going to bring many new designer interests to the playing field and open the doors to getting what theme you would like to have made for you. If you look in the admin there is a tab that pops down and says " want our designers to build your site for you." I personally know that nearly any look you want can be done on the system.

However I would like to point out a couple useful topics of information.

"Pixie" is a program located at download.com which is great for helping one understand css. It tells you the HTML color code of what you are hovering making it easy to locate codes which helps in understanding the basics.

"Firebug" is a firefox add on that is a very useful tool. I would reccomend this to anyone looking to learn css.

Weebly also makes it easy to learn as you can preview the changes giving you the power to play around and not have to accept what you tried to learn which allows you to learn.

By right clicking and saving images and looking for them in the files folder allows you to save those files, change them and re-upload them to you liking.

Hope this helps some of you guys.

Reply
06/01/2010 5:14am

That's the thing that worries me too JAJohnson, that the votes are hidden. Probably they have a good reason for hiding it. For example not knowing much votes you have - thus not knowing whether you need to manipulate the votes or not. I think Weebly is worried for possible manipulation of the votes, which will make the whole contest unreliable. It could probably easily be done with erasing cookies from the system, as it was done at the beginning of the contest. I'm really worried about that too!

hummm... Zlatko I too understand that many had tried to do manipulate voting before & that was not good... but now having it set the way it is I don't think anyone can do that... so for me I don't see where showing where the vote count is at would make it so anyone can do that here... you are only allowed one vote as a memeber...
I honestly feel it is now a voting contest & we as the voters should beable to see where the votes are standing...
